Formed in the winter of 2004, Cities already has a few notches on their belt to be proud of. They’ve shared the stage with such notables as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness, Thunderbirds are Now!, and We are Scientists.
Now the baby-faced boys from Chapel Hill, NC have come out with their self-titled debut.
Cities is a ten song epithet that seems like it wants to move away from the frantic rock stylings so popular within the indie rock genre. The first two tracks on the album, “A Theme” and “Capitol” have some catchy hooks, intriguing lyrics and musically are very appealing. However, to this listener, the rest of the album falls flat. The next eight tracks are droning, somber rock with repetitive vocal melodies that just remind me over and over that this has been twenty seven minutes of my life that I will never get back.
There is no doubt in my mind that the band, Cities, has a lot of potential to become a staple in the indie music scene. I just don’t believe that this release will be the one to launch them to stardom.
