If you found yourself rocking out to the television lately, I’m guessing you weren’t watching American Idol, but rather yet another iPod commercial, which seems be playing better tunes that what you find on your radio dial. It was the Caesars’ “Jerk It Out” that had you wondering, “Who sings this song? I must find out!”
Well, the gig is up. Now you know. Complete with the wonderful keyboard treats and tambourine tricks we embraced in the early ‘90s with Britpop dandys the Soupdragons, Inspiral Carpets, The Farm, Happy Mondays and The Charlatans UK, Caesars spike the punch with the echoing ‘60s space rock of a Who super sundae with The Monkees whipping cream topping, perfect for emulating Anne Margaret on the dancefloor after a few Manhattans or to show off your new/vintage white belt.
Starting off with a Vegas twist as Caesars Palace in Sweden 10 years ago, a few band member changes, confusion ensued over their name, which was changed a few times to avoid the legal wrath of some wiseguys in the U.S. From there they had three album releases, landing smack on the debut listing for Astralwerks in 2005 with a chance at upping the number of 200 fans they tout about having in their homeland.
Caesars’ previous album was named 39 Minutes of Bliss, and although I have yet to hear that one, by going off the title alone I would say that Paper Tigers follows the all-out-rock-out path. From their single “Jerk It Out” to “Throwaway” and “We Got To Leave” you can’t help but embrace a Josie & The Pussycats kind of innocence, where all you need is a tambourine and a smile to survive this scary world. Then there’s the title track “Paper Tigers” that would be perfect as the closing movie soundtrack where the guy got the girl, discovering the meaning of his life in the process, and was well on his way to curing cancer and putting the pharmaceutical companies out of business.
Add this one to your collector’s item list and your beach bag.
