Vancouver BC delivers They Shoot Horses Don’t They, an eight-piece carnival of orchestral odd-rock in the vein of Dog Faced Hermans, Tom Waits and The Unicorns. The group’s first LP, Boo Hoo Hoo Boo impresses with an ingenuity, solidity and depth that is remarkable for such a new group of musicians.
Having released merely one EP prior to this debut album, TSHDT leapt in head-long into the recording, taking barely over a year to come up with enough material to not only release a full-length, but to guarantee it an end-to-end stinker-free disc.
While the music is dominated by staccato drumming and pervasive horns, the vocals weight everything, keeping the sum of parts on a sensitive level. Breathy and contemplative, male-lead mic-work keeps this heavily Aquarian band from losing itself in chaos.
You’ll find this cute and fun but not embarrassing to play, even in front of your jock friends. Just kidding, you don’t want to play it for your jock friends – but take it to your next all-night pillow fight.
