I wouldn’t be surprised if someone told me that MC Lars really works for Clear Channel. This guy is a perfect example of everything that’s so wrong in the music industry today. Within minutes of listening to his album “The Graduate” you can feel the exploitation just sinking in.
First of all, if this guy is an emcee, then so is Deborah Harry. Talking fast does not constitute rap, even if it’s something called “Post Punk Laptop Rap”, which apparently Lars is the pioneering.
After listening to the song that’s sure to be his next single “Hot Topic Is Not Punk Rock” I think that he should probably rename his movement to something like “Product Placement Pop” and just be honest about it. The entire album is like one long reference to everything that’s trendy in today’s pop culture. MySpace, iPods, Mickey D’s, chat rooms, it just goes on and on.
My guess is that MC Lars knows exactly what he’s doing. He’s a Stanford graduate that’s smart enough to know that if you make a sing-songy album jam-packed full of commercials and websites, then the kids are going to love it, and buy it. If you feel like killing some brain cells, then you should buy it too.
