In a recent interview with BBC News e24, legendary electronic music artist, Gary Numan, states frankly and with a bit of a smirk, “When [The Pleasure Principle] came out, it didn’t do that well, critically. It got to number one, but the press didn’t like it. More recently, they’ve been re-reviewing it and it’s now considered to be a classic…which is nice.”
Numan is celebrating the 30th anniversary of this pinnacle album, which paved the way for so many musicians, by re-releasing The Pleasure Principle along with The Touring Principle ’79, a DVD of his first ever U.K. solo tour in 1979, both on Mortal Records label.
The current Pleasure Principle tour, which brings Gary Numan to the Gothic Theatre on Thursday, October 28, is a rare occasion, where Numan will perform The Pleasure Principle in its entirety.
In past appearances, including the Lovebox Festival in London this past summer, Numan typically refrains from going down ‘80s memory lane. Sure, he’ll throw fans a bone or two, but for the most part the electronic music iconoclast prefers to live in the present. “A festival is an opportunity to let people know where you are and where you’re going next. I don’t think it’s a place to remind people of what you did 30 years ago.”
That being said, Numan plans to also perform more recent songs during the tour, including those from his 2006 album Jagged (Metropolis Records) and not-yet-released tracks from his forthcoming Splinter, which is currently in production.
You can warm yourself up with live versions of “Asylum,” “Cars” and “Halo” on Numan’s MySpace www.myspace.com/garynuman and get a taste of what’s to come on the DVD on his YouTube Channel www.youtube.com/garynumanofficial.
