Just last week my friend Jennifer sent me a link from the Afghan Whigs’ Facebook photo gallery, showing Greg Dulli from the early days of his pinnacle band. The picture was sweet and childlike, showing Dulli and photographer Johnny Riggs in a comedic, marital embrace.
This week the universe delivered more Dulli activity, this time for something set in the near future. We’re talking the first-ever solo tour for the veteran musician, which will include 29 cities in five countries. This will be one hell of a warm up for what is expected to be an even more extensive jaunt next year as Dulli and his group Twilight Singers release the band’s fifth album, coming out on Sub Pop in early 2011.
For the first night in New Orleans on October 8, Twilight Singers’ guitarist Dave Rosser will join the set, along with Rick Nelson from Polyphonic Spree, to debut new Twilight Singers tracks.
Other stops include thirteen U.S. cities and jet plane rides to Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Belgium. While a venture to the Barcelona show sounds very enticing, time and money dictate that either the New York City Bowery Ballroom or San Francisco Café Du Nord (one of my favorite venues) gigs are a bit more feasible for this lowly writer.
