TuneIn Powers Podcasts at SXSW 2018

“If listening is magic, then podcasts are the fairy dust,” TuneIn said in their recent SXSW announcement.

The explosion of podcasts over the last few years has seen this audio medium become more center to online radio companies like TuneIn as well as the streaming services. According to study by Concordia University Saint Paul, 68 Americans, or 25% of the country’s population listens to podcasts. Advertisers have paying attention, literally, as ad revenue from podcasts grew from grown $119 million in 2016 to $220 million in 2017.

That’s a lot of fairy dust.

Last year TuneIn’s activation involved daytime sports programming outdoors on the east side of 6th Street, and in the evening SXSW artists performed. In 2018 it looks like they’re focusing on the podcasts, hosting a variety of talent at the new Fairmont in the Wisteria Room.

Good times to drop would be on March 12 for a Gilmlet Media Favorite, The Nod, with hosts Brittany Luse and Eric Eddings. “The Paradise Garage” is the story of New York DJ Larry Levan and the serendipitous alignment of a sweaty dance night with Levan on the decks impacted the life of a friend of The Nod, Reggie Ossé. The show’s producer Emanuele Berry also paid tribute to the Levan after his passing.

On March 14, Coffee & Mayhem (also the way to describe a typical Monday around KB land) features Jamie Broadnax of Black Girl Nerds, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Konstantinos Pantazis and Darren Passarello from Agents of Mayhem.
