I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Rhymesayers can be ceaselessly trusted. Every release is as flawless as the last and this is just another shining example.
Back in ’02, Underground hip-hop’s seminal geniuses MURS and Slug (Atmosphere) combined forces to release Felt: A Tribute to Christina Ricci. The album was more than a comedic masterpiece; but the hype that rose from the concept album arguably brought both artists to a new level of recognition, and in this writer’s honest opinion, was pivotal in their current success.
At it again, the pair return with Felt 2: A Tribute to Lisa Bonet. This album confirms that the MURS/Slug duo have a true obsession with young actresses (Ricci as Wednesday in the Addams Family movie, and Bonet as Denise on the Cosby Show). It also slaps us back to attention as a reminder that the combined forces of these two musicians are, quite unbelievably, even more than the sum of their parts.
The lyrical exchange between the two is relentless. The shit makes your ears tired, even sore. And the music, assembled by Slug’s main source of sonic product, Ant digs deep into the caverns to come with beats and samples that are everything but tired.
Ladies and gentlemen, send your daughters to Juliard; the Felt project must never lose its inspiration; and as long as girls can act, these boys will crank out the jams.
