Telegram – comprised of singer Matt Saunders, bassist Oli Paget-Moon, drummer Jordan Cook, and guitarist Matt Wood – hails from London, having played together since 2013. That year BBC 6 Music’s Marc Riley’s debuted their first single, “Follow,” which quickly catapulted their sound and fan desire.
Telegram’s dance card began to fill up quickly in 2014.
I got the chance to see them at The Great Escape festival in Brighton, DIY All-Dayer at The Laundry in East London along side with Spring Kings, Flyte, Jaws, and Hinds out of Madrid (then called Deers), and Swn Festival in Wales late in that year. The band has been described as frenzied, but I would have to relate that most to Matt Wood, whose live performance is liken to one being electrocuted, but with utter control and determination.
Telegram released two single E.P.’s in 2015, including “Taffy Come Home” and “Aeons,” with a B-side cover of Brian Eno’s “Needles In The Camel’s Eye.” Their 2016 album Operator is due out February 5th (Gram Gram, pre-order here), and the single 7” for “Taffy Come Home” was just released this month.
Telegram tours solids through the U.K. before heading to the states, starting at Rough Trade East in London on 4 of February, where you can sip on a coffee or a pint whilst taking in an in-store performance, wrapping all the way ‘round the country and returning from whence they started with a gig at Moth Club in London on 3 March. Then Telegram is off to Austin for a number of SXSW gigs to be announced.
