Electro-pop group of metamorphosis, Metronomy have released an EP for their single, “Everything Goes My Way” (Big Beat / Because Music) in anticipation of their spring 2012 North American tour. The original single kicks off the 5-tracks, followed by remixes from Ewan Pearson, Jesse Rose, Enchante and Psychemagik.
Metronomy remixed many artists’ work and been remixed themselves by dozens over their more than ten years of performing, which of course is common in the electro-synth world. (Prior to their 2011 studio album, The English Riviera, the band was not known for vocal pop; but this new stylistic development for them has been–no pun–instrumental in their recognition as a pop force.)
At times this latest formulation conjures the twee-ness of Pinback, and at others the broody, slower bits of The Cure pre-Fascination Street–and yet others, dancy and up-beat. Their Wikipedia entry describes Metronomy as “wonky pop” and we can think of no better distinction to bestow upon them. Having caught the band recently at San Francisco’s Rickshaw Stop, we found a sell-out crowd agog with the band, pressing up to the stage with a discernible fervor for the entire period after semi-local local support act New Villager.
It’s a clear sign that these folks, under the helm of multi-instrument master Joseph Mount, have developed an adherent cult-following fan-base. The addition of Anna Prior on drums and vocals makes for a more balanced stage presence, as this was an all-male revue up that point. Also in the live line-up is Oscar Cash on sax, guitars and keys, plus bassist Gbenga Adelekan, both of whom are very competent musicians and share the reigns on backing vocals. Unfortunately, this act still doesn’t have Colorado on their tour roster; but dates could certainly be added to their tour dates, which start March 25, 2012 in Atlanta and end back in San Francisco on April 12, this time at Slim’s (update: Metronomy is slated to play both weekends at Coachella, on April 15 and 22).
For the time being, immerse yourself in their recordings. Perfect for long urban bus rides or for background jams to putter around the house (or, in this case, knock out a writing assignment) to.
