When I hear that a band has Britpop leanings, I can’t help but perk up my ears like my dog Sam does when he hears the crackling of a chip bag. It’s the instinctive sound known to deliver the most scrumptious of treats. The DMA’s have indeed lived up to the high bar previously set by Britpop greats before them, including Ride that I saw earlier in the week, and Noel Gallagher, whom I was immensely excited to see at Governors Ball.
Coming up in the afternoon slot at the Big Apple stage at Gov Ball, it was easy to get right up front a few minutes before their show (and there was no sign of Noel, ready to boo them). But within minutes of their permeating the New York air, the muddied terrain was full up with adoring fans and faces.
The DMA’s single “Laced” is glorious to experience live, as you felt each vocal note and guitar lick rush out of each member, Johnny Took, Matt Mason and Tommy O’Dell, “It’s in my heart! It’s in my head for you!” And that pulsating heartbeat continues on “Delete,” which starts out poignant and sweet, then builds and crashes from the stage to the arms and bodies waving to the motion below.
The Sydney guys made some fast fans and broke a few hearts in Brighton recently at The Great Escape, and I witnessed the same at Gov Ball. They’re playing the first day of Bonnaroo this coming weekend and have a full dance card through the summer. Add them to your must-see list if they’re coming your way.
