Local band updates

DJ Vajra (Platter Pirates) performed his six minute DMC routine on 1190’s Basementalism crew this past week, and then DJ Low Key (Radio Bums) came in to finish up the show. You can check it out online at http://basementalism.com/realaudio/073104.rm. DJ Vajra will be heading out this weekend to hit up L.A. for the DMC US Finals on Saturday, so send good vibes his way.

Curious Yellow is heading into the studio while working on filling in the blanks left by their former guitarist and bassist. We heard last Friday what that new guitarist might be, but currently our lips are sealed…unless you’re pouring a double Absolute Mandarin on the rocks.

Nick and Tom from DeVotchKa will be performing a special acoustic set this Saturday, August 7 at The Lions Lair in Denver, playing with Andrew Bird. They also announced their CD Release Party, which will take place at Sherman Events Center (18th and Sherman) in Denver on September 17. Tickets will go on sale next Monday. The new CD, How It Ends, is DeVotchKa’s third full length and was recorded at Wavelab studio in Tucson, and produced by Craig Schumacher, (Una Volta, Calexico, Giant Sand, Evan Dando).

This in from Mike Barsch from Soda Jerk Presents, “I’m sure many of you have heard about the trials and tribulations the owner of The Starlight in Ft. Collins has gone through. Well, naturally many people decided they were not going to go to shows at The Starlight until the ownership changed. Those of you that were part of the boycott can put your signs down, because The Starlight is under new ownership as of a couple days ago. We’re happy that a change was made and we look forward to bringing lots of great shows there this fall.”

CrystolbAlS, located on the border of Denver and Aurora on Colfax, has also changed management and ownership. The current owner is returning to Greece, and the new management team will be turning the club’s format back to rock, as it was during the Sportsfield Roxx days. The club has been a spot for hip-hop shows.

Punkvoter.com Launches Print Ad Campaign in 19 Battleground Cities; ‘Think the Presidential Candidates are the Same? Think Again’

This Wednesday, July 14 Punkvoter.com released their “Think the presidential candidates are the same? Think again” educational campaign in 19 battleground cities as a comparison between Bush and Kerry on 7 major issues. Punkvoter.com created this ad campaign to show kids that there are huge differences between these two candidates on the many issues that young voters care about.

Founder of Punkvoter.com, Fat Mike Burkett of the music group NOFX stated, “When we’re out on tour — kids are always asking me if there really IS a difference between Bush and Kerry.”

These ads are simple score-cards based on the candidate voting records, statements, and actions around the critical subjects of reproductive rights, equal rights, civil liberties, the economy, environment, gun control and education funding. View the ad at: http://www.punkvoter.com/press/depends/BushvsKerryBWAd.pdf

Fat Mike continued, “Since our fans generally don’t read the New York Times or Wall Street Journal, this ad makes it easy for them to see the drastic distinctions between the two candidates.”

Punkvoter.com is putting these ads where young voters will read them. These ads will be placed in alternative newsweeklies, music magazines, handed out as flyers, and distributed online.

The first series of these ads will start running this week in the following cities’ alternative newsweekly: Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Madison, Detroit, Seattle, Portland (Oregon), Portland (Maine), Albuquerque, Phoenix, Palm Beach, Tampa, and Miami.

Punkvoter.com has purchased a full-page ad in the upcoming addition of Rolling Stone and will also be handing out this scorecard at the Punk Voter booth on this year’s Warped Tour, which comes to Denver this Sunday at Invesco Field.
