8TH AURORA ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL
June 2 – 5, 2005
If you think Asian film is nothing but kung fu and sword play then shame on you. Case and point is the 8th Aurora Asian Film Festival which showcases inspiring filmmakers from the Pacific Rim. It is engaging, enlightening and only for a short time. If that’s not enough there is a free outdoor showing of Princess Mononoke Saturday at dusk.

What time is it?
Here’s the scoop, my friends: I am your new movie guy. I am putting out a call to all Denver filmmakers to get in touch. I want to write about you. Yes you with the 6 minute film about sexuality, yes you with the documentary on privatization of RTD routes and of course you with the feature length classic of boy meets girl in Denver. I want to hear from anyone remotely interested in defeating the idea that you can’t make movie in Denver. Sure, some you are doing a film to get out of Denver, but none-the-less its still filmmaking and I’ll shed light on it regardless of the motive.
I have heard from the people at Double Edge Films with their new film, “11:59” due out soon. They have their trailer posted and as you can see they used Denver locations, Denver actors and even a Denver band, Ion proving that Denver does indeed have the resources.
For those who have no silver screen ambitions, there are the blockbusters, the results of Cannes, the midnight matinees and of course DVDs lying around which I will be pleased to rant about. For instance I saw “Madagascar” the other night. It goes with out saying that it looks great and is by no means as good as “The Incredibles” but it feels pretty good through most of it. Plus there’s no breaking into song – well there is the singing of “Happy Birthday” and “New York, New York,” but nothing Andrew Lloyd Webberish. See – I’ll write something like that.
The point is I am here for your input and general movie critic* quip. I look forward to do what ever I can for this very cool and Denver based webzine.
