Pity Sing – Self Titled EP

When we got this CD in I have to admit, I laughed. I couldn’t help but think of Looney Tunes’ Sylvester and Tweety, and the cartoon where Tweety catches the cat hanging there trying to get to his cage, pulling off each little “pitty” who went to market, until he, “Ran out of pittys!”

What does this have to do with this band? Absolutely nothing.

But I can say it did bring me back to a more a youthful, carefree time when I was buying up albums (the vinyl kind) from Icicle Works, Talk Talk, Simple Minds, Chameleons UK, ABC, and INXS. There are bands today that are in a sense, bringing back this sound. Some are doing a bang up job and its obvious they’re making an effort to differentiate themselves and avoid piggybacking off of anyone from the ‘80s. Then there are some that are just annoying, and you can’t help but think, “If I wanted to listen to Blondie, then I would just listen to Blondie. Why am I spending my time with a pseudo version of the real thing?”

Not so with Pitty Sing.

This short but sweet EP is constructed with an elaborate canvas of strings and keyboards that swirl in gorgeous gestures, guitars that soar with climactic rhythms while singer Paul Holmes pulls at the heart strings of anyone with a pulse.

It is on “Robot” where they take this trendy style of music down a new path, fooling you with subtle, modern spaceship tweaks and blips along with captivating structures. As the song reaches the final frontier, the ship goes into a warped speed, twisting and turning in a black hole of chaos.

What bummed me out was that I missed these guys at their CMJ showcase this past year, and apparently, they had Mr. Ocasek in the audience with his wife, Paulina Porizkova. I would love to see these guys get whatever they need to make, and, oh I don’t know, seven more songs with Ocasek at the production board.
