The Guardian Showcase - 12:30pm - 3:30pm TAIX
As a main media sponsor, The UK's Guardian has curated a cool array of acts stateside, from the subtle yet provocative Los Angeles Police Department that disperses sounds that are the antithesis of their monikor, to the dark and intellectual hip-hop excersions of Korea Town Oddities. The showcase wraps with a bounce of indie dance and tongue in cheek antics of Nicky Blitz, hanging with his buddies to get high, which makes him feel so “Alive," to getting "Hawk" with an Elvis swagger and Miami Vice touch.
Aussie Bar-B-Q - 12:30pm - 6:30pm The Champagne Room
When it comes to showing up for festivals like SXSW, you can always count on any flavor of an Aussie Bar-B-Q to deliver some munching goodness paired with musical magic. For fans of Correspondents, Tuka blends a bit of 20s swing nostalgia and jazz with a modern urban beat and lyrical creep. Ngaiire has some pipes on her, crafting gorgeous R&B melodies that take you into another time and space, but with political and humantarian lyrical messages lying within, as in "Around."
Joycut - 6:30pm TAIX
The world of electronic music continues to evolve and almost come full circle back to deeply integrating more human elements of soundmaking into digital productions. Now on their 10th year, Joycut continues to take this medium to new levels. 2013's PiecesOfUsWereLeftOnTheGround is testament to their ethos of creativity, ingenuity, and overall musical craftsmanship. Having interviewed other Italian acts over the years and hearing the challenges musicians are faced with in their native country (economically, culturally) as compared to other European countries, it's exciting to hear and see more talent of this level emerging from Italy.
Raindear - 8:30pm Lot 1 Cafe
Swedish electro dance performer and songwriter Raindear sings about topics that dig deep into one’s psyche; dark themes of what she sees in the world around her that when blended into “Japanese dance hooks” and her powerful vocals, and be can be cathartic and musically captivating. After the release of 2014’s The Game EP, she’s introduced a series of singles this year, including “Museum” (feat WTNSS), "Veins" and the ethically introspective song “Human Kind.”
A few bands from yesterday's picks play today as well. So if you missed Balthazar they perform at 10:30pm at TAIX, and Panda Elliot is at Echoplex at 8pm. See today's full schedule below.
