FEWS – SXSW Music 2016 Band

It was last summer, July to be precise, when the tension-infused, darkstar four-piece FEWS was being interviewed by The Quietus about the beginnings of this band and the release of their first single, “ILL.” At the time The Quietus stated FEWS “has yet to fully puncture the indie blogosphere,” but that would soon change.

Releasing that first single “ILL” on the Speedy Wonderground label, which also works with Teleman, Kate Tempest, TOY, Telegram and Childhood, complemented FEWS’ relentless gigs and tour schedule, taking the band members through the UK and Europe, opening for TOY, Bat for Lashes, and Ghostpoet. Then came the second single, “ZOO” and the accompanying industrialised video with an MTV 120 Minutes, 90’s alternative visual vibe.

Fast forward a few more months to the beginning of 2016 and FEWS’ rise only increases, with showcases at Eurosonic Noorderslag, a festival that’s known to draw numerous music business execs, and their slot at PIAS Nites in January. Festival plans are already in the works, including Live at Leeds in April after they come stateside to perform at SXSW next month.

While the touring continues with Spring King this week in the UK, FEWS are indeed making time to work on their full-length debut to be released on the Play It Again Sam label, partnering with producer and Speedy Wonderground owner/founder Dave Carey, who also produced their two previous singles. Having gotten this far with just the two officially-released songs is commendable and pays credit to the results of FEWS’ laser-focused pursuit in grinding out songs in front of people night after night.

Towards the end of The Quietus article, singer and guitarist, Fred, stated frankly, “We just wanna play live, as much as possible, at this stage.”

Yeah, we totally get that.

Side note tidbits: The band members, Fred (singer/guitarist), David (guitarist), Rusty (drummer), Lulu (bassist) prefer to go only by their first names. Three members are Swedish, one is American (guessing it’s Fred, since he’s the one that moved from San Francisco to Europe), and have their homebase as Malmö, Sweden.
