The 2015 SXSW Music is On – 1st Round of Bands Announced

The rush is officially on. It’s time to begin preparing for SXSW 2015, as the first round of bands was announced today.

As Sx veterans know, March 17th when SXSW Music begins will be here in the blink of an eye. With the number of bands playing SXSW growing over the years to over 2,000 in 2014, let’s dive in a bit now in to see who’s playing…while we still have time to breath.

Carl Barât returns to SXSW with his new band, The Jackals, comprised of members he found through an online search, set to release a debut album at the beginning of 2015 and follow the stop in Austin with a U.S. tour.

Australia’s the church are now in on their 25th studio album, Further/Deeper, exciting news for the SXSW crowd to experience new tracks and old favorites along with their SXSW interview as part of the Music program. Given their longevity in the music biz, no doubt this isn’t their first Sx.

Alvvays from Toronto are other Sx vets who’ve stayed busy this past year since their self-titled debut. Mew must be set to release new music, given their last release Eggs Are Funny goes back to 2010. Courtney Barnett’s rise continues this year, with debuts on U.S. night television on Jimmy Fallon, and then bouncing throughout the festival circuit.

It’s interesting to see Scott Weiland and The Wildabouts in the list, but would make sense after the touring he’s been doing stateside this past year. Most of those show set are STP songs with a few Velvet Revolver tracks in the mix, so let’s see if the group will be something beyond a cover band of his past. That said, the Stone Temple Pilots acoustic show back in the day at the Fillmore in San Francisco was truly mind blowing and a treasured memory.

Newbie post punk band Publicist UK, not a group from Britian who has to add on the U.K. letters to avoid copyright hassles, ala The Charlatans, is actually from Longmont, Colorado. Their debut album is expected early 2015.

Very cool to see The Big Pink back in the Sx saddle, having seen their blast of a set at the Dickies showcase. The band teased earlier in the year that new music was on the way, “These things take forever,” so get on it boys. Time’s a wastin’.
