Palma Violets – Danger in the Club

To attend a Palma Violets show is liken to sticking yourself in a large coin-operated clothes dryer along with some random shoes, a few beer cans, some whiskey mixed with a pint of saliva, and pressing ’Start’. It’s quite the ride, and you’ll come out if it disheveled yet blissful and happy (just not Downey fresh). Having heard some of the new songs from Palma Violets third album, Danger In The Club (Rough Trade), back in March at SXSW, this third endeavor follows suit with their previous two releases, being the on-demand version of their live performances.

The jumpin’ jack flash tunes bounce from “Hollywood (I Got It)” to “Girl, You Couldn’t Do Much Better on the Beach” and the bass-heavy “Gout! Gang! Go!” The title track starts with a stroll down Bond Street at the height of the Swinging ‘60s era, then it’s just a hop, skip and a jump over to Lambeth Walk for “English Tongue.” And after a long night at The Pinapple, and as the sun is beginning to peek it’s head above the horizon, you’re “Walking Home.”

While Palma Violets are known for being brash alley cats, “The Jacket Song” has them wearing hearts on leathered sleeve, wallowing in bittersweet slide guitar and acoustic sentiment. On “Coming Over to My Place,” Sam Fryer (vocals, guitar) and Chilli Jesson (vocals, bass) take their hearts and tuck them safely back into place, bellowing their distain for being in love.

Still not sure what the “Secrets of America” are, but no doubt they could be revealed at one of the last shows left on the second round of the Palma Violence, er, Violets U.S. tour. The London band makes it’s way to Denver this week, playing Larimer Lounge on Friday, May 29.

May 25 – Minneapolis, 7th St Entry
