SXSW is almost upon those of us who are attending, so we’re trying to keep up with emails and RSVP's while prepping our bodies for the marathon and packing major doses of vitamin B12.
For those who can't make the trek to Austin, there will be a number of opportunities to experience the minute-by-minute happenings, performances, and exclusive video that even the people there on the ground won’t have access to. Plus, audio streams broadcasting live will give everyone in Austin and beyond, stories, news, and music they can take in on the go.
Good news arrives eight months ahead of the international meeting of minds, musicians, influencers, auto engineers, geeks, filmmakers, fintech programmers, biometric scientists, artists, iconoclasts, doctors, entrepreneurs, and policy makers: SXSW 2017 will provide expanded access to all attendees for its Interactive, Film, and Music programming.
When you think of SXSW, sessions and keynotes featuring heads of state and Hollywood stars, thousands of band gigs and hundreds of films come to mind. So do lots and lots of parties, all serving up a bevy of beverages. What better time and place for a cocktail app to launch, even in the midst of a noisy, massive conference? "Giving away a free drink, everybody's interested," said Hooch CEO, Lin Dai, "Nobody ever walked away from that conversation."
We’re just back from the SXSW Music Festival, and wanted to share some of the big themes that we heard throughout the week. Most promising perhaps – brands, technologists and promoters at SXSW concur it’s a great time to be in the music industry. These experts point to an expanding music ecosystem as creating an unsurpassed opportunity to connect, engage and interact with fans – for those who leverage the tools and technology available.
For many years SXSW has seen representatives from all over the world migrate to Austin to connect, promote and learn. In the last five years in particular, more foreign country governments - Germany, France, Spain, Netherlands, Ireland, Chile, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore - and have invested in sending their companies and people to SXSW to extend their reach into the U.S. and other foreign markets.
SXSW is intense. It’s massive. There’s an opportunity at every turn to make friendships, to make connections that are mutually beneficial for your business, career, or for hitting the parties. This year attendees using the SXSW® GO will notice a new in-app social networking feature, Around Me, introduced by the app’s developer, Eventbase.
When I saw the New York Times notification pop up on my phone last night, “Obama Urges F.C.C. to Adopt Strict Rules on Net Neutrality,” I wasn’t convinced that what I read would make me happy. It wasn’t as clear as the Guardian’s headline, “Obama calls on FCC to make ‘strongest possible rules’ to protect net neutrality.”
In 2013 the Hackney Council took a big risk, venturing to Austin during SXSW Interactive to seek opportunities for East London businesses to connect with Austin and U.S. businesses by setting up and operating the first Hackney House Austin.

As a veteran of SXSW, I’ve learned many tricks of the trade over the years to not only survive the ‘marathon, not a sprint’ annual conference and party extravaganza, but come out the other end thriving. Most of these lessons have been learned the hard way by being ill prepared or just not knowing what to expect, since things change from year to year. I’m sharing my SXSW veteran tips and tricks so you can enjoy an event better SXSW experience.
